Hey Love bugs! Good day and Happy Monday!!! You better not be whining about how you hate Monday's because somewhere in the world, another Girls Dreams just came to reality, all because of hard-work and dedication so suck it up and get to work. Okay so moving on...Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber was just crowned Miss USA 2016 at the conclusion of the pageant's live broadcast last night.
After successfully navigating through the swimsuit, evening gown, and forever-feared (also, very controversial) Q&A round, Miss District of Columbia beat all the other gorgeous ladies and emerged Queen. While everyone is busy celebrating the ebony beauty, there are just a few things you should know about the Strong and Smart 26-year-old Miss America.
1. She was raised in a military family
Due to her father’s military career, she relocated multiple times to states including North Carolina, Nebraska, Minnesota, Virginia and finally to Washington, D.C. Her dad deployed to Iraq following the 9/11 attacks in 2001, and she followed her pops into the Army at age 17. She has siblings serving in the military as well.
2. Deshuana is an active Military Commander
She was commissioned as a Quartermaster Officer in 2011 and is currently a Logistics Commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit at Fort Meade, MD, while working full-time as an IT Analyst for the U.S. Department of Commerce. Who could ask for a better Miss USA..not just a beauty but she has Brains!!! and she truly represents America, serving at the highest level as a military commander!
3. She continued to serve during the Pageant
She worked with the USO and took part in the “Operation That’s My Dress,” where she paired military teens and their moms to help them find the prom or cocktail dress of their dreams. The girls then got to take part in an uplifting fashion show. She loved being part of it because it showcased the challenges military teens experience because of frequent moves and deployments of their parents, something Deshauna went through as a teen.
4. Deshauna is passionate about her work in the military.
Deshauna has focused her platform on PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces. She proudly mentioned her military status numerous times throughout the competition, nailing a question about women in combat during the interview portion, as well as what makes a woman confidently beautiful.
5. Deshauna loves to live an active lifestyle.
In what little free time she has away from her work and military duties, she loves to dance, hike and enjoy quality time with her family.
America couldn't have picked a better Queen. Smart, Pretty, Hard-working and Dedicated. She received her tiara from Miss USA 2015, Oklahoma's Olivia Jordan. For the first time in 14 years, District of Columbia (and only third time in history) District of Columbia, has the raining Queen. Congratulations to Deshuana...wish you a great reign.
